IRCC Unveils Unprecedented Support Measures for Iranians and Earthquake-Affected Nationals

In a groundbreaking move, Canada has unveiled temporary special measures to extend support and relief for Iranian nationals and residents of Türkiye and Syria amidst ongoing crises. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced these measures to aid those who may choose to extend their stay in Canada due to the volatile situations in their home countries.

For Iranian temporary residents in Canada, the extraordinary measures include waiving specific processing fees, facilitating the issuance of open work permits, and providing priority processing. This means that individuals opting to extend their stay will experience streamlined processes and maintained status while their applications progress. Travel documents and citizenship certificate fee waivers are also extended to Canadian citizens and permanent residents residing in Iran, facilitating their travel back to canada.

These measures, retroactively effective from February 9, 2023, until February 28, 2024, mark a significant step in Canada’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for those facing uncertainty and challenges in their home countries.

Simultaneously, Canada extends its compassion to Turkish and Syrian nationals already in the country temporarily. With exceptional processing measures extended until January 3, 2024, these measures include fee waivers for processing fees, open work permits, and replacement travel or citizenship documents for those in need. Notably, the requirement to hold a passport or travel document for a permanent resident visa has been waived for those affected by the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.

The IRCC is prioritizing various applications, including new and pending overseas applications from affected individuals and existing applications for permanent residence, ensuring efficient processing during these critical times.

Canada’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid shines through these special measures, showcasing a nation that stands united in supporting those facing adversity. These initiatives alleviate immediate challenges and underscore Canada’s dedication to fostering a global community that values compassion and solidarity.
