Due to the number of visa-free destinations provided for passport holders, the International Air Transport Association (ITATA) assessed all 199 passports in the world, and published the list of the most powerful passports in the following year.
Below are the ranking of the most powerful passports as reported by CTV NEWS:
- Japanese citizens own the most powerful passport in the world for the 5th year in a row, as they have the opportunity to travel to 193 destinations out of 227 without the burden of obtaining a visa.
- South Korea and Singapore placed 2nd just ahead of Germany and Spain with 190 visa-free destinations.
- In fourth place, three countries of Finland, Italy, and Luxembourg tied on 189.
- European citizens of Austria, Denmark, Netherlands and Sweden have the 5th most powerful passport with access to 188 destinations.
- Portuguese passport rises to 6th place along with France and the UK, while US passport stands on 7th with 186 destinations visa-freely.
- Malta and Canada’s passports are also among the top by owning the 8th most powerful passports.
- The least powerful passport belongs to Afghanistan again with only 27 visa-free destinations followed by Iraq, Syria, and Pakistan at the bottom of the list.
It should be noted that there is a direct correlation between passport strength and the economic power of the country due to the fact that only six per cent of passports can facilitate visa-free travel to more than 70 per cent of the global economy.
Also, approximately 182 out of 227 world destinations are accessible to just 17 per cent of passport holders.
With the wide global mobility gap between the countries, more and more high-net-worth investors looking for the plan B option and owning a powerful passport.
